Mitch Honan

May 3, 2023

Canon for Finance and Property Mitchell Honan announced today that he is leaving the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota staff to take a position with the South Dakota Legislative Research Council, effective May 31.

Canon Mitch’s new position will be as a Legislative Fiscal Analyst, assisting legislators by providing accurate, objective, and relevant analysis of state programs and budgets.

“I came to South Dakota three years ago, and the time spent working on diocesan staff has changed my life and changed who I am,” Canon Mitch said. “To everyone who has helped me learn about the Diocese of South Dakota, and the people who comprise it, thank you. I am staying in Pierre, so I will be able to advise my successor on what I have found to work.  Fortunately, I can still be a member of this unique and beautiful Diocese going forward.”

“Mitch has been a very valuable asset to our Diocese, and words cannot fully describe the difference between what our financial picture looked like in 2019 and what it is like now,” said The Rt. Rev. Dr. Jonathan H. Folts, Bishop of the Diocese. “Mitch invested a lot of passion and expertise into this position, and most importantly, his motivation was his Christian faith and his love for how our Diocese is beginning anew to participate in God’s mission.”

The Diocese will begin an immediate search for a new Canon for Finance and Property. The job posting will be available as of Thursday, May 4, on the Diocesan web site, www.episcopalchurchsd.org, under the “Opportunities” section.

“Blessedly, Mitch will still be around and close by,” Bishop Jonathan said. “We are grateful to him, we are grateful to God for him, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
