From The Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota, the hymnal contains 177 traditional hymns, including the “Doxology,” “Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” “My God, and is Thy Table Spread,” among others, and service music as well.
This project meets an emerging need in The Episcopal Church. According to Insights from the 2023 Parochial Report Data, Lakota is the third most popular language in the church, preceded only by English and Spanish. The publication of this hymnal addresses a centuries-long scarcity of accessible worship materials for Dakota- and Lakota-speaking communities. These hymns are more than just a means of teaching the congregants to sing; they reflect the core of Church experiences in the territory, both on reservations and off. The hymns are embedded in the hearts of the people and represent their soul music.
“Wakan Cekiye Odowan / The Dakota Hymnal is a testament to our commitment to honoring indigenous voices and ensuring that sacred traditions continue to thrive,” said Airié Stuart, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Church Publishing Incorporated. “Our goal has always been to provide meaningful resources that enrich spiritual lives while also nurturing cultural heritage.”
