Deacon Marty Garwood

ECW Honored Woman

The Episcopal Church Women of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Rapid City, respectfully nominate the Reverend Marty Garwood, Deacon, for the 2022 ECW Honored Woman Award.

Deacon Marty Garwood has faithfully served the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota her whole life. Marty is a daughter of Christ Episcopal Church, Lead; came of age at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Rapid City; and discerned Holy Orders at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Rapid City. She has been the mentor to generations of Education for Ministry (EFM) students, helping each person develop their own theological acumen and curiosity. In addition to her service to—and proud membership in—the Episcopal Church Women of our diocese, Deacon Marty has served on the Standing Committee and the Diocesan Disciplinary Board. She is the Chair of the Credentials Committee of our Diocesan Convention and is a Deacon Mentor in the Niobrara School for Ministry’s Deacon Formation Program. Deacon Marty participated in the United Thank Offering’s Great EpisGoPal Race in 2020. She is a faithful attendee of the Niobrara Convocation, is a Visiting Chaplain at Thunderhead Episcopal Center, and helps lead worship at Camp Remington. She has been—and continues to be—a friend and advocate to many throughout our diocese.

At St. Andrew’s, Deacon Marty embodies the very best of the diaconate, connecting our congregation with the community and helping us understand the needs of the world. She facilitates book groups, assists with sacramental preparation, and coordinates the Altar Guild and pastoral care givers/Eucharistic Visitors.

Outside of her work for the church, Deacon Marty has had a long career working in local government at the Rapid Valley Sanitary District. She is active with the PEO organization and sits on the Rapid City Library Foundation Board. She is a volunteer at the Humane Society of the Black Hills and is season pass holder to the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra.
